AMC Clinical Exam Course

Passing both parts of the AMC exam is an unavoidable hurdle for all IMGs wanting to obtain General Registration through Standard Pathway.

AMC exams are well known for the level of difficulty and the failure rate is often high. This is especially true for the AMC Clinical Exams where there are no multiple choices to choose from and candidates must rely on their clinical skills and knowledge to get through all clinical stations on the day of the exam. This is a daunting task with many unknowns for candidates planning to sit the Clinical Exam. The specialty topics and knowledge covered are vast. Candidates are often left feeling lost and overwhelmed and wondering how to get through all the recommended textbooks in time before the exam.

"What do I use to study? In what depth do I study them? What type of questions tends to be important? What is the quality of answers I am expected to provide? What is the direction I would take when I begin my studies? What is the approach I need to adopt to optimize my chances of success in these exams?" - These are the common questions candidates should be asking right from the beginning.

Coaching Model and Road Mapping

Our Clinical exam course is based on our Coaching Model. We create an individualized road map for you based on your personal clinical competency and we guide you and coach you along this journey. Unlike many other Clinical exam courses they teach you the clinical conditions from textbooks, we believe we should rather spend the time teaching you and guiding you on what books to study from, what are the efficient ways to study them, how that differs between some of the specialties, how you should be making your own notes, how to do that efficiently. We will set goals and targets on a regular basis and we will monitor you along the way through our teaching and coaching sessions. We utilise clinical questions, constructive feedback based on the assessment of your answers, examine the progress and structure of your study methods and notes as you work through each of our recommended books.

You are expected to do most of the studying your own from our recommended books and with our methods as you progress along the road map under our guidance. Unlike other Clinical exam course where they focus on teaching you clinical conditions which you can easily study on your own from textbooks. We will give you the tools and the method and guide along the way. If you are not moving in the right direction, or not making adequate progress we will inform you and work with you to improve or correct the direction you are on. We believe this is optimal way to prepare and study for Clinical exam.

There are 2 AMC Clinical exam course packages- Premium or Standard package. Both packages get the same access to entire series of online recorded lectures. The key difference is Premium package contains 40 coaching sessions, and Standard package contain 20 coaching sessions. Each coaching is 1 hour, they are 1 one 1 coaching session mostly with our Medical Director. Online coaching sessions will be initially sued to coach you on technique and format for MCQ exam, then to discuss the exact books we recommended for you to study from, how to use each book, when to start study from each book along the road map, based on your TNA performance. We will assign on regular basis (weekly, 2 weekly etc.) a set volume of work to be studied on your own from each book and at following coaching session our medical director or other relevant coach will discuss with you your progress on the set volume of work, run through set questions for you based on the volume of work for the week, determine your progress and correct your study method and the way you use/study from each book if required. We will provide feedback on your progress at each coaching session. There is set volume of work you need to cover from each of the recommended book before the end of your road map, you will need to do most of the study on your own to adequately cover this volume of work, then have regular coaching session with us to determine your progress, discuss and work through difficulties you experience. We also use practice mock Clinical exam questions as part of our assessment method to determine your progress at coaching sessions. Most of the studying to achieve the regular targets are done on your own. You need to dedicate 20 hours a week, comprised of 2 hours/day Mondays to Fridays, plus 5 hours/day Saturdays and Sundays. This need to be persisted for the entire duration of the Clinical exam course with us. We aim for you to be adequately prepare heading into the Clinical exam. You need to dedicate yourself to put this level of self-study on your own. We can’t do the actual studying for you, you need to do that yourself. We can however coach and guide you to adequately prepare for the Clinical exam.

Training Needs Assessment (TNA)

We will need to assess the level of your clinical knowledge to understand your current clinical knowledge in order to plan a road map for you. We also determine your suitability for our coaching model. We don’t normally turn away IMG doctors for our Clinical exam course but if IMG doctor’s knowledge to very poor we might not be able to enrol them because they might not be suitable for our coaching model.

At TNA session we will be testing your clinical knowledge with common clinical presentations. These questions are commonly encountered cases in General Medicine, General surgery and General Practice etc. We will be doing this session via videoconferencing on FB messenger. During the session we will verbally ask you a question and you will then verbally provide your answer. When answering questions use the format of history taking, physical exam, Differential Diagnosis and management plan (investigation and treatment) etc. We would like to see how you would systematically approach and manage the clinical presentations.

Also we will provide you feedback on your performance at TNA and answer questions you have on the Clinical exam. To the extent possible we will also have introductory discussions about format and techniques which can be useful during the actual Clinical exam.

As mentioned in my pervious email there is a fee of $256 (Australian dollar) for TNA and it is not refundable. It is about 1.5 hours long. Generally we don’t turn away candidates after TNA but if your performance at TNA is very poor we reserve the right not to admit you to our Clinical exam course. TNA fee is not refundable, and it is in addition to the Clinical exam course fee.
